Prison Courses in Brazil

In April 2018, Brazil’s first Vipassana course for prison inmates took place in the Ribeirão das Neves penitentiary, an institution located close to the capital of the state of Minas Gerais.

The course became possible after the head of the prison himself learned Vipassana and realized that it could be a powerful tool for rehabilitation. Twenty-one men completed the course, and since then Ribeirão das Neves has hosted monthly one-day sittings and a second 10-day course this past May.

In São Paulo state, another prison hosted a 10-day Vipassana course in August–September 2018.
